NOVEMBER 2023
A primary part of the mission for the Light and Sound Design studio has been to provide space for people to come together and explore the complexities of what it means to be alive and creating in these present times. The underground art and music worlds of New York City have always been a place where these explorations are celebrated and these gatherings have been and will always be vital to generating the life force necessary for so many to take on the struggles of living and fighting for a better world. It’s my hope that in this dark time, where genocide is brazenly being carried out in our names, that we can find a way to continue to come together in the spirit of creativity and love to, at the very least, acknowledge that a better world is possible. Because If not here and now, then when and where?
Thank you for your continued support. The November line up at the studio is exciting and I’m looking forward to sharing space with all of you. If you have ideas for ways this studio can support the struggle for liberation beyond what we are already doing, please be in touch.
And in case there’s any doubt where I stand: FREE PALESTINE. CEASE-FIRE NOW.
PEACE AND LOVE KG
PRESENT SOUNDS
hosted by Imogen Teasley-Vlautin & fieldtalk
THURSDAY 11/02
Imogen Teasley-Vlautin is a composer, songwriter, and producer from Los Angeles who is currently in residence at Pioneer Works. Their work has ranged from film scoring to electronic music performance and they’re now shifting their focus to songwriting and production. On Thursday, they will be DJing a selection of original compositions, acompanied by live work on a 404 and screening a short film they scored called Glens Falls Sequence.
fieldtalk (aka Vin) is a the enigmatic resident DJ, sound engineer, and brain child of Present Sounds who specializes in overlaying his own field recordings with deep ambient sounds and energies. This month he will be DJ from his extensive cassette collection on some new tape decks that we’ve just installed in the booth.
Kate Henderson from Bed-Stuy Acupuncture & Therapy will be offering acupuncture and Elise Mascia will feed you pasta if you let her.
Present Sounds happens every Thursday at the studio from 6-10pm.
FEREL SHADOW DANCE UNION
FRIDAY 11/03
Friday night’s offering came about last minute, but when Amani (aka 30000AD, who will also be celebrating their birthday) reached out with the idea for this one I knew it had to happen. Amani’s DJ sets at Last Saturday Dance have been some of the most memorable of the year, and I’m excited to see what her crew has in store for this one.
From their own invite:
In this special edition of FSDU, co-presented with Spiral Generator, we are joined by guests Russell E.L. Butler, Purelink, and Spiral Generator performing thoughtful, expansive live sets; plus dynamic selections by Mira Mira and 30,000AD b2b T.Wan. FSDU's resident DJs will be warming up the room at doors, giving you time to get comfortable and settle in before our guests take off. As always, the Feral Shadow Dance Union aims to provide an intimate and unique dancefloor for you to unwind, hidden away from the hustle & bustle of weekend celebrations. We’re excited and grateful to partner with the veteran LSD crew, whose keen attention to quality has been crucial in keeping our little corner of the universal dancefloor alive. Proceeds from the night will in part go to People’s Bailout NYC – a local organization that has freed 432 of our neighbors from New York City jails through community bailouts. Our hearts and solidarity are with the people of Palestine, and our donation to People’s Bailout is in the spirit of the liberation of all oppressed peoples of the world suffering under brutal rule by settler, colonial regimes.

Pique-nique & Vin.yl present Steam Down
FRIDAY 11/08
Straight from the UK, Steam Down lands in Brooklyn for their NYC debut, channeling the soundsystem culture of south-east London, with their distinctive fusion of jazz, grime, afrobeat, and funk. This one is brought to you by Vin.yl and the Pique-nique crew who never disappoint.
ꆳ WEIRD SCIENCE ꆳ
SUNDAY 11/19
The foggiest Sunday Dance you’re gonna find. Post daylight savings, so it’s gonna be extra dark. His R*sident A*visor profile refers to him as a storyteller, I’ve not yet had the pleasure but by all accounts I’ve come across, Vladimir Ivkovic crafts a compelling narrative for the dance floor. I’m so stoked that Ania and Marjoe’s curatorial vision has found a home at the studio and that I get to enjoy the embarrassment of musical riches that they bring to NYC.
Sunday, November 19th from 4pm-11pm
Some things to listen to:
Jan Woo Live on The Lot Radio 10.30.23
Palestine Forever on The Lot Radio 10.28.23
Free Tea with KG on The Lot Radio 10.19.23 (tracklist featuring primarily sounds from the Palestinian underground scene)
