MARCH 2024
Things will be quiet around here this month. Changes are afoot. If you’ve yet to come by for a Present Sounds session, this is your chance- we’ve got four [*edit: three] left before we take a break from hosting events. You can RSVP for any of those over at lightandsound.design. Tomorrow’s edition with Jake Muir and fieldtalk (aka Vin) will feature shadow play by Alice Cohen and Stephanie Wuertz and as of this writing there are 7 spots still available. I have no doubt this will be a beautiful night. [my apologies I drafted this post earlier this week and just getting around to publishing now! It was a beautiful night, catch any of these artists doing whatever they are doing whenever you can..]
The last two years have been a wild ride and this month I feel as though I am waking from a dream. It’s been a difficult decision to wind things down. The last few months here have felt particularly dialed in, but it has also become vividly clear that there is no sustainable future for this work at 249 Huron St. Landlords are landlords and the economics of running an underground venue are already tenuous at best. The levels of anxiety around the precarious nature of this project are depleting my motivation to continue growing into this spot. It’s time to take a step back and regroup, find a new home, and build something that can withstand the forces of the NYC real estate game (capitalism) longer than this beloved loft.
That said, there is interest from the community in holding onto the studio as a space for recording and rehearsal. I certainly would love to continue making music here and if enough people get onboard there may be another chapter to the 249 story. If you are interested in joining the collective conversation about what this might look like please get in touch directly.
Please stay tuned to this sub in the coming months. I’ll still aim to be in touch monthly. There are several exciting satellites that are making their way into the Light and Sound Design orbit, and I’m excited to share them with you when the time is right. I’ll offer this hint though: if you see a nice portable FM radio at a junk shop, pick it up. You’ll need it this summer…
Thanks for the support. Onward and upward.
LOVE
